Because of its beauty, the city received the nickname "Cidade Maravilhosa" (Wonderful City). Not only Christ and Corcovado mountain are responsible for the astonishing postcards, but also the mountain called Pão-de-açucar (Sugar Loaf), the beaches known as Copacabana, Ipanema, and Barra da Tijuca, not to mention the colorful carnival parade.
Pão-de-açucar
Rio is an important economical and cultural center. Petrobras, our oil company, and Rede Globo, the largest Brazilian communication company, have their headquarters there.
The "Cidade Maravilhosa" was the capital of the country until the 1960s; it was discovered on January 1, 1502. Rio means river, and Janeiro, January.
